Jul. 19th, 2011 @ 12:52 pm Osgood Retires

DETROIT – Goaltender Chris Osgood announced his retirement today after 17 NHL seasons, including 14 with the Detroit Red Wings.

Osgood made the announcement during a media conference call with general manager Ken Holland.

Osgood, 38, retires as the 10th winningest goalie in NHL history, with a career record of 401-216-66-42 (W-L-T-OTL), a 2.49 goals-against average, .905 save percentage and 50 shutouts.

He won two Stanley Cups as a starter (1998 and 2008), three overall. He ranks eighth in league history in playoff wins, with a career postseason record of 74-49, a 2.09 GAA, .916 save percentage and 15 shutouts.

Osgood ranks second in franchise history with 317 wins, behind Terry Sawchuk (352).

Osgood recorded his 400th win on Dec. 27 at Colorado. But his last appearance was Jan. 4 in Edmonton. He had surgery for a sports hernia on Jan. 11 and experienced a couple of setbacks in March.

Osgood and Holland talked this weekend in Vernon, British Columbia, where both have offseason homes; and the conversation obviously led to the conclusion that the Wings were going to go in a different direction and Osgood was going to retire.

Detroit GM Ken Holland also announced that Osgood is staying with the organization as a goalie consultant and will help mentor the Red Wings' goaltending prospects, including 2008 first-round pick Thomas McCollum.

Along with playing 565 games as a Red Wing, Osgood also suited up for 103 for the Islanders and another 76 for the Blues from 2001-04. He returned to Detroit after the work stoppage, altered his style to become more of a butterfly goalie and flourished for several more seasons.

Osgood's 401 career victories rank 10th all-time in the NHL, two behind ex-Edmonton great and Hall of Famer Grant Fuhr. Osgood likely will get some support for induction in the Hall of Fame when he's eligible in three years.

Jan. 23rd, 2009 @ 10:05 pm NHL Players Association will not reopen CBA

In a move expected for the past few days, the National Hockey League Players' Association announced it will pass on an option to re-open the Collective Bargaining Agreement this year, assuring labor peace for the next three years.

"We are making this announcement now because this should be viewed as positive news for all the stakeholders in our game," said Paul Kelly, the NHLPA's executive director, during a Friday press conference at the Hyatt Regency here.

Now, the League and its players will operate under the current CBA, agreed to in 2005, until its expiration in 2011.

Aug. 30th, 2008 @ 10:10 am How many Wings fans out there do NOT live in Michigan? A questions post....
Current Location: home
Current Mood: curiouscurious
I was born & raised in Michigan- & I LOVE hockey! But, I've been away from Michigan since 1994. So, my question to all you other die-hard fans out there is:

How do you see the Wings during the year?

Do you buy tickets to see the Wings at other venues?

I have done this myself- I now live in Alabama & Nashville is only about 4 hours away.

The question is HOW do you buy the tickets? Do you buy full season & just try to sell the non-Red Wings games? What about 23-game or 10-game packs? And, if you do sell them- do you sell them via ticketmaster or do you go another route- like e-bay or message boards for the other teams?

The few times when we've went to Nashville, we bought the Individual tickets & everytime I've had to CALL ticketmaster & wait to speak to an actual person to get the seats I want.

Also, do any of you travel to see the Wings? When we go home (to MI) during Hockey Season- I make sure that we get tickets to the Joe. But, do any of you buy tickets to see the Wings when they are out on the road? Where do you like to sit? And, do you meet up with other Wings fans? I know that while watching the Nashville Predators or kitty-cats as I like to call them... I would LOVE to be sitting with more RED than just myself & my husband! :-)

I know that this is a lot of questions in one post but, we just got the email from www.nashvillepredators.com that their tickets will be going on sale soon. So any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!
